Why do we need to stay hydrated?

Have you ever get the feeling each day that there are too many things to do and get done that at some point your body couldn’t handle and continue what you have been doing anymore as you feel mentally and physically exhausted from it all. It’s easy to lose our clarity and feel heavy and drained until we hydrate our body, because somehow whenever we drink water we get more energy to do anything worthwhile, while it also refreshes the mind.

It is no secret that Dehydration affects our ability to cope up with things as “The Journal of Sport and Health Science” concluded that being dehydrated hurts any physical tasks for any activity longer than 30 seconds. So it is suggested to drink water whenever you feel thirsty to not feel sluggish and tired whenever you are about to do physically demanding tasks.

You need to drink enough to stay hydrated since the human body is largely made of water. “It makes up about two-thirds of who we are and influences 100 percent of the processes in our body” So don’t deprive yourself of it if you are in dire need of one, because even if we can live for up to 50 days without food, we can only survive a few days without water.

When you are feeling thirsty or dehydrated you will feel nauseous and somehow find it hard to concentrate. So clearly, Staying hydrated might sound small but it will definitely make your body and day feel better

There are many advantages to good hydration in some circumstances. So make sure that you drink enough liquids as it comes with a wide range of benefits. Having said that, here are a few of those benefits;

  1. Improves Mood – Drinking water makes us feel so refreshed that it actually improves our state of mind. A small study conducted on 25 women and published in the Journal of Nutrition found that dehydration has been shown to negatively impact moods and cognitive function.

If you feel tired easily, there is a high chance that it could be due to a lack of consumption of water as dehydration makes the body function less efficiently. Fatigue is one of the first signs of dehydration. If the body has less water than needed for it to function properly, there will be a drop in blood volume which causes the heart to work harder and pump oxygenated blood out in the bloodstream, so drinking adequate water can help your body function better and reduce fatigue.

Healthy heart – Staying hydrated is also beneficial to heart health as being dehydrated and not drinking enough water will have the resting heart rate to go higher than normal because there is less blood circulating throughout the body and thus, will have the heart to work harder to circulate it normally. Being hydrated gives a normal resting heart rate of 60-100 beats per minute which is also associated with a lowered risk of cardiovascular disease.

Though it is also advisable to be mindful of drinking water and not consume too much of it as it could also be hazardous to one’s health.

Overhydration can lead to water intoxication. Drinking more water than your kidneys can process can throw your blood sodium levels out of balance, so watch what you are consuming and make sure it’s enough to get hydrated and not exceeded. If left untreated, water intoxication can lead to brain disturbances, and symptoms will arise.

It is always possible to stay hydrated without overdoing it. If you are thirsty more than usual it is known that you are already dehydrated. The color of your urine is also a good indicator of your level of hydration. The lighter the color the better the level of hydration and the darker the color the more you are dehydrated, so pay attention to these things to not over hydrate and dehydrate yourself.
