Memory loss — and the things you can do to prevent it

So what exactly is memory loss and how can you be able to prevent it?? Well, memory loss is unusual forgetfulness which means that you might not be able to remember and recall past or current event that has happened or is happening in your life. It is basically being forgetful about things you once knew about.

These are the types of memory loss; the short term and the long term, the main difference between the two is that short term memory is the capacity to hold small amounts of information in the brain whilst long term memory holds information in the brain from the past which definitely means that it is common for the aging brain to develop short term memory loss as you grow older.

When one experience short term memory loss, things such as forgetting about where you have placed your wallet or missing and forgetting about current important events would occur. While a long-term memory loss on the other hand will often forget about past history that has happened in your life. A long-term memory loss can be caused by severe damage in the brain such as injury, trauma, or even other mental health issues.

Regardless, memory loss can happen to people at any age as it is not age-specific especially if you exhibit a sudden and temporary loss of memory that isn’t any way related to aging, with mild forgetfulness instead of more serious memory problems that occur for older people with the likes of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.

Nonetheless, the key to preventing memory loss to happen is to avoid circumstances where you are risking your head to injuries and trauma to prevent any damage to the brain which lets long term memory loss to occur, or by just keeping your brain active which does prevent memory loss at any age, whether short term or long term.

So how do you exactly keep your brain active? Well, it starts by always participating in brain-stimulating activities, as studies show that “those who engaged in mentally stimulating activities experience a slower memory decline compared to those that didn’t” and it is also said that those who “exercised their minds later in life had a 32 percent lower rate of mental decline compared to people with average mental activity.” So keeping your brain active does indeed help with preserving memory and it also enhances the mind to not experience any memory decline.

Having said that, here below are 7 simple things that you can do to mentally challenge yourself to be able to prevent memory loss

  1. Reading a book – Reading sharpens the mind and reading daily can help keep your brain in shape as you reach old age because reading can not only help you gain more knowledge but can also help you improve cognitive function
  1. Write – writing something requires thinking and you are absolutely using your creativity freely when you do which helps the brain function better as writing is one of the brain-stimulating activities and participating in any brain-stimulating activities at any age is known to preserve memory.

Do something unfamiliar once in a while – doing something that is familiar to you can get your brain to get used to what you are doing which lessens the ability to think more because you have trained your mind to do something over and over again instead of opting to learn something new and unfamiliar to your mind. Try doing things such as shopping at a different grocery store or driving a different route to work instead of doing the same routine all the time.
  1. Play games that require strategy – the key to a vibrant and healthy brain includes a challenge, so keep your brain fit with new activities that test various skills. Engage in an activity that keeps your brain active and working such as playing games that requires thinking and concentration. It might be from a complex crossword puzzle to a chess game and etc. as long as these brain exercises help you get smarter than ever before.
  1. Take a class to learn a new skill – Get yourself in a habit of being mentally active by challenging your brain to learn a new skill that you haven’t yet known. If it is possible, try to take a class about something you are wanting to learn as a higher level of education is associated with better mental functioning and may help keep memory strong especially in old age

With that said, the cortex of the brain also consists of billions of tiny nerve cells which are called neurons that when you learn new things, the tiny connections in the brain can get stronger, so the more you challenge your mind to learn, the more your brain cells will grow.

  1. Pursue a Hobby – If you are one that likes the arts then pursuing your hobby is definitely a good way to prevent memory loss. Whether it would be through painting or drawing as long as you are using your creativity you are absolutely putting your mind to work and be active. Hobbies that also includes the use of muscle memory such as playing instruments or playing ball sports is likely to stay the brain areas active with the likes of motor and somatosensory cortices as it requires an increase in brain activity as well as an increase in concentration.

Have a Job that requires your brain to be active– Challenging your brain with mental exercise is believed to activate processes that help maintain individual brain cells and stimulate communication among them so it is best to have jobs that keep yourself mentally active and become a way to keep your mind sharp. Jobs that include technical skills that use specialized knowledge to perform a task efficiently makes you more likely to study for it to gain more knowledge to improve areas of your work life.
